As I sit here looking over the beautiful mass of water which is the Knysna lagoon, I can not help but think of all the regulations which make it a nightmare for all to enjoy the way mother nature intended. Especially if you have a boat and neglegted to familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations of even getting it launched. It has to be surveyed, including to check that you have the necessary buoyancy in case of an accident. That is something that will keep our boat afloat and will cost in the region of R2500 ….Notwithstanding the fact that you also require life jackets to keep the passengers afloat. Then you have to have a skippers license and have your boat registered and pay a further fee to SANPARKS which will be used for the upkeep/maintenance of the lagoon. Mind those missing channel markers or you will require a new prop or engine as well after you hit the unmarked sandbanks.

Should you then also wish to go fishing with your boat, you will require a fishing license, a permit to collect bait and a further fee just because you dare wanting to fish off your boat as opposed to sitting on the shore, with your line in exactly the same water and maybe not too far away from a boat where the occupants are fishing close to shore…..Seems a tad over the top to me……a bit like hunting squirrels with a machine gun.

I cannot help but think of all the holiday makers who arrive here at this time of the year, just to find that it will cost them around R3000.00 before they are allowed on the water. That is if the necessary buoyancy still needs to be seen to as they acquired the boat 3 years ago and no one told them about the new laws. If rumour is to be believed then beware anyone deciding to ignore these rules…. The “lagoon police” will get you. They may not be able to do anything about the foreign fishing vessels who venture into SA waters, but you have nowhere to run on inland waters and literally become a sitting duck for the government money machine. If only we knew where the money collected for the fishing permits went.

I have my pride and joy, a cabin boat, which has been in the water for 6 years and I wasn’t even aware of all these regulations until a week ago. Consider the mad rush to get everything seen to a week before the holidays……Not pleasant at all seeing that there is only one person in the whole of Knysna who can see to it that your boat complies with the necessary buoyancy requirements…..and he is booked till the end of January 2009! You may just have to leave your boat on dry land for the duration of your holiday. At least on a positive note, you will not have to bother with flushing the motor after churning salt water the entire holiday!

Anyway, having gotten that off my chest, I guess that’s enough for now. The weels of the government money making machine will continue turning…No matter what my point of view is.

Cheers for now.

Financial Solutions Group operates mainly along the coast between Mossel Bay and East London. We do, however, have supporting arrangements with like-minded organisations in the rest of South Africa , where we do not have a physical presence. Our services offered are very comprehensive yet simplistic. These include the following:

Business broking - Sourcing of sellers and buyers

Finance broking on all commercial transactions, e.g. business acquisition/expansion, Property development and retail/commercial property investments.

Commercial property sales, including shopping centres, office complexes, etc.

Offshore investments via stainless steel tank containers

On property development up to 80% finance is available and on commercial\Investment property 70%. These represent the norm and may vary depending on investor profile.

Many ex-patriots are faced with the dilemma that they are “foreign residents” but still South African citizens. This creates a foreign exchange dilemma, one we can assist with in legally repatriating funds above the allowed foreign investment allowance by virtue of an investment in stainless steel tank containers.

What are the major benefits to investing in tank containers?

An international investment with long-term (20 years plus) annuity earnings in hard currency with regular cash distributions.

The investment can be made in Rands and the earnings legally kept abroad in hard currency without limit - which does not effect your offshore investment allowance

Where the Rand is used there is no need to go through the formalities of the foreign investment allowance to achieve tax clearance.

Local tax allowances generate deductions that can be offset against the tank container income.

A 6% to 10% Dollar return tax free for the first seven years.

Apart from the above tax advantages, retirement and estate planning benefits can be achieved.

Aquaponics is the combination of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (farming without soil) and entails the the design and commissioning of greenhouse-based systems growing fish (usually Tilapia) and vegetable crops in a closed-loop system.

The major expense involved in building a Fish Farm is in the filtration of the water. In Hydroponics, it is in providing sufficient nutrients for your vegetable crop. In Aquaponics, nutrient-rich water is pumped (or flows by gravity) from the fish ponds to vegetable growbeds where the water is filtered and oxygenated by the plants. Combining these two technologies thus offsets the negatives of each other.

Once cycled, a system like this can produce tons of fish and vegetables on a tiny footprint and using minimal water and power. Although the capital cost is reasonably high, the yields from a well-designed system can provide a steady return within a very short period of time.

So where does Aquaponics fit into South Africa’s agricultural landscape? Being independent of soil (the plants are actually grown above ground, in 13mm gravel) the condition of the soil is irrelevant. This would open up vast tracts of otherwise unusable or infertile land for food production in this country.

One 30m x 10m greenhouse housing an Aquaponic system can yield the same vegetable crop as 1HA of soil. Over and above this about 5-8 tons pa of high quality protein (the fish) is also produced.

Properly planned, the system has the potential to also support an algae pond capable of producing about 200L of clean, eco-friendly bio-diesel per week, enough for a small emerging farmer to run all of his vehicles and implements as well as a backup generator for the system itself.

To reverse the irreparable damage being done to South Africa’s food security by ill-planned land distribution to unqualified and under-capitalized emerging farmers, our Government should rather invest heavily in training and supporting the establishment of large, medium and small-scale Aquaponic ventures on land not currently used, or suitable, for large-scale food production using conventional means.

Aquaponic system could be built right where they are most needed, in small communities in the rural areas, providing food, employment and skills transfer.

Knysna Aquaculture, together with our Australian technical partners, are hard at work designing, building and commissioning Aquaponic systems in the Southern Cape at present, but we have had inquiries from all corners of the country, as well as the rest of Africa and the Middle East. We can be contacted at our blog Synaptoman or on aquaculture@knysna.sa.com or phone Kevin on 082-5546981.

We have also recently established a Tilapia Hatchery is Knysna using top quality broodstock from Stellenbosch University, and are able to supply local farmers with mixed-sex or high-yielding male-only fingerlings.

As business brokers we have a duty to protect the sellers’ sensitive information entrusted to us. This is generally done via a non disclosure agreement (NDA). Included in an NDA, which is completed by a potential buyer showing interest in acquiring a business, is the question of affordability and how the buyer intends funding such acquisition. This is of particular importance as most new entrants to the world of owning your own business, do not fully understand gearing (paying for the business via funds borrowed from a financial institution or otherwise) and the effects on business cash flow.

Depending on the amount borrowed, or the amount required by the buyer, a financial institution will look at the business cash flow and the sustainability thereof. Loans for business acquisition are generally granted over a five year repayment term and it is imperative that after the amount required to repay the loan, there are sufficient funds left over in the business to pay the owner a salary and to ensure the business can meet other operational requirements. Over and above this important aspect, the financial institution (Bank) will also look at the amount of security on offer by the business and the buyers in their personal capacity. This is required in the event that the business goes “out of business”. Not much value is placed on items such as stock and equipment, hence the buyer will have to have a fairly substantial asset base to offer as security.

The above can merely serve as an introduction to this topic. Copies of an NDA can be found on the Financial Solutions Group web site, www.fs-group.co.za under the section businesses for sale, or contact Errol Rudman on errol@fs-group.co.za

The recession buzzword is out - “if it looks like a recession, feels like a recession, smells like a recession, then it must be a recession”. If we are to believe this then it will be a recession!!!

We have had the scares in the past where one man has predicted a market crash on a specific day, what happened? It happened. If we start jumping on to the recession bandwagon we are in trouble because the more we believe it the more it will happen.

Thank goodness for people like Rian le Roux, chief economist at Old Mutual. He says : “the country is unlikely to experience a recession. A full-blown recession looks unlikely given the likely trends in investment and consumption by the private sector, as well as welcome support to key sectors of the economy from the weaker rand.” (Le Roux was responding to recent debate centered on fears that South African GDP growth could enter negative territory (constituting a recession) towards the end of 2008, largely on the back of slowing consumer spending.)

Hang in there, think positively and work at it and we will be feeling a lot happier shortly. If you have lost your job recently, take the bull by the horns and become one of our huge pool of entrepreneurs out there. You might just find that losing your comfy spot was the best thing that could have happened to you.
